I’m not big on making predictions when the new year starts, but there are a few things that I become hopeful of. One thing that I really hope to see is more competition and innovation in the mobile device arena regarding user interfaces. It seems that with the advent of the iPhone, it’s sparked some liveliness in other mobile manufacturers. One of those manufacturers is Microsoft, who’s currently working on Windows Mobile 7.

What seems interesting about Windows Mobile 7, is that they are adding touch and motion gestures, which can make the user experience quite pleasurable. One thing that some phones companies don’t understand, is that just because a phone UI has touchscreen doesn’t make it a good experience. Touching the screen to open an application has been around on many phones for a long time. Then once you’re in that application, it’s back to the crappy UI that was present before. I’d like to see a little more than that.

What makes the iPhone such a pleasure to use, is the experience of using that touch screen once you are inside of an application, and the interaction with that application. This is what Microsoft seems to be doing with Windows Mobile 7, and I am confident that they will get it right……at least a little bit. I’m also confident that Google will do a good job with Android as well.

Overall, it seems that the mobile arena is headed in the right direction, but more innovation is definitely needed, so hopefully we will see some interesting products this year.

Well the good news has finally arrived and all of the rumors can finally lay to rest. Apple has finally shown, and told about their new mobile device due to release sometime over the summer. This makes a very bold statement in a number of ways, but the main message that I get from this, is that it’s time for everyone to step it up a notch.

I can’t imagine the thoughts going through the minds at tech companies that make mobile devices when they saw the information on this phone. The fact that this phone will be a small computer bundled into a design nothing short of amazing is very intimidating to competitors. In his keynote, Steve Jobs mentioned that smartphones/pds’s are too complicated, and that the QWERTY keyboards aren’t changeable, therefore, the Apple phone is all touchscreen.

The phone is supposed to feature a full Safari web browser with full Javascript/CSS support. I am extremely interested in seeing how various websites perform on such a device. Somehow, other companies will have to compete, and I’m not trying make big predictions are anything, but this could help spark greater development into the mobile arena.

The design of the phone is unlike anything else. Just when I thought my Moto Q was one of the sexiest phones out, here comes the iPhone that’s thinner, and way more sleek. All of a sudden my phone isn’t too appealing.

This year just got alot more interesting with this news of Apple’s phone, and I am very anxious to see how other companies respond to the way that they make their phones. Because right now, Apple just changed everything up, and is light years ahead of everyone. I chose a very good time to become a fanboy.

So this morning, I was doing my normal web surfing and came across the Time magazine’s brand new website. My first thought was, wow, they surely did stretch things out, but it looks great, and I’m starting to notice alot more of this.

What I like about the new Time mag site is the use of space with the amount of content that is there. It’s no easy feat trying to keep things looking clean and in order when you have that much content to present on the front page, but they did a great job with that. I also think that if that design was any slimmer in width, it would look like an utter mess.

What I also like about this, is that they offer the site for your mobile device as well. So I checked it out on my Moto Q, and it looks awesome. So it seems that Time mag online is really keeping up with the times, and that’s very good to see with such a big organization.

Now of course this can’t happen with every site out on the web, but I really like seeing designs expanding in width. It opens up new doors for creativity and site architecture. I look forward to see a lot more of this throughout the year, and the more I see, the more ideas I have for the next version of this site.
